Thank you for sharing the sad news, Rebecca. So many in our discipline have benefitted from Ty’s smart scholarship, dedicated service, and quick wit. My deepest sympathies to her friends, family, and colleagues.

Wow, that is a terrible shock.

Ty finished her dissertation and moved on to Georgia Tech a few years before I got to Texas Tech, but faculty in the graduate program regularly invoked her name as a great example of success, of what we might strive for ourselves. I didn’t meet Ty for a few years but soon started to see her at conferences from time to time, dating from back then to as recently as this past year. In those interactions, it was abundantly clear that she was the kind, smart, strong-willed person and scholar I’d heard about. I always enjoyed seeing her around and was grateful for the time she shared.

Every spring I (still) trot out her IEEE article on the ATF report coming out of the Branch Davidian conflict in Waco in the 1990s and ask my students to read it to learn more about ethics and visual representation. It’s one of those articles that remains compelling for me—bright, incisive, compassionate—reflecting its author.

I’m so sorry for Ty’s family, friends, and colleagues at Georgia Tech. Tough to hear this.

Like Bruce, I’m stunned. And crushed. My graduate years centered around classes, lunches, happy hours, going to conferences, studying and learning to code with Ty, Joanna Castner Post, and Amy Hanson.

Joanna’s sudden death was horrible, and Ty and I talked about that typical topic of time passing too quickly at her funeral.

Ty grabbed life by the horns, and was always up for an adventure. She wanted to wring every drop of joy and fun that could be gotten from every day.

May she be loving her next big adventure—
