[ATTW-L] Video proposals

In 2015, Miles Kimball, Craig Baehr, and I put together a special issue of TC in which we reported on an extended mixed-method research project involving Communication officers at companies such as Microsoft, Adobe, and Madcap Flare.  We, too, saw evidence of the increasing demands on technical writers to learn about and use video in their day-to-day work.  I’m not surprised to see Michael Alley’s post, and, having had an opportunity to work with him prior to his move to PSU, I know he offers sound/wise counsel.

Hello, Joanna—

You are wise to have your students gain experience with film. Next to writing and presentations, film is becoming a major medium of technical communication. Although I cannot directly address your question, I do have one suggestion for you or others interested in teaching your students how to incorporate film: Consider having your institution bring in Lauren Murphy to run a workshop (https://www.whitepaper-video.com/) on creating a scientific film.

Once a year, I have Lauren run this workshop both at Penn State and at a consortium of universities in Norway. Holding a bachelor’s degree both in mechanical engineering and in film, Lauren brings a unique expertise to her workshops. Although she currently does film work for television shows out of New York City, she has developed an outstanding workshop for undergraduates and graduate students in engineering and the sciences Perhaps the best testimony for her workshops are the films of her students:

Has anybody assigned students to create a video proposal argument (i.e., a proposal for some sort of change delivered via video format)?  Do you have any samples of your students’ work that you would be willing to share with me?
