[ATTW-L] 2019 White House report on mitigating the impact of pandemic influenza

Again, as you’re teaching your online classes during this crisis, a timely example for class discussion might be the September 2019 report “Mitigating the Impact of Pandemic Influenza through Vaccine Innovation” by the White House’s Council of Economic Advisors.

The report estimates “the potentially large health and economic losses in the United States associated with influenza pandemics”: specifically, fatalities of 54,000 to 538,000 and economic damage of $413 billion to $3.8 trillion.  It includes lucid explanations about how influenza viruses develop and how seasonal influenza differs from pandemic influenza as well as discussing the scientific details of vaccine production.
