Dear Colleagues,
I’d like to bring you up to date on the IEEE Transactions editorial team’s response to the problems of racism, sexism, nationalism, colonialism, and other attitudes and practices that stand in the way of achieving diversity, equity, and inclusion in our profession and especially in the research that we publish. Last year, the editors of the journals and book series in technical and professional communication held two facilitated listening sessions with a number of mostly young professionals who opened our eyes to the ways that we could make our publications more welcoming. Here’s what we at the Transactions have done in response over the past 14 months.

  * Dr. Josie Walwema was appointed Associate Editor for Diversity and Inclusion, and has been active in shaping our response to the listening sessions. She contributed an editorial, “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Transactions” (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=9440028<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fieeexplore.ieee.org%2Fstamp%2Fstamp.jsp%3Ftp%3D%26arnumber%3D9440028&data=04%7C01%7CHAYHOE_G%40mercer.edu%7C7d8ab84cca3d410cca5e08d9877aed00%7C4fb34d2889b247109bcc30824d17fc30%7C0%7C0%7C637689784321427030%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=rkUKLXFQRxeTlhx3vmJFxz6tDpgtglrAAi62mlO9vc4%3D&reserved=0>), to our June 2021 issue.
  * We commissioned a special issue on enacting social justice in our profession that will appear in March 2022. Guest editors Drs. Godwin Agboka and Isidore Dorpenyo and their team of peer reviewers are completing the review of 15 manuscripts. This issue should be an important contribution to the conversation on this vital topic.
  * We have formulated a policy on inclusive language and a policy on nonwestern/nontraditional topics, genres, rhetorics, theories, and methodologies (https://procomm.ieee.org/transactions-of-professional-communication/for-prospective-authors/guidelines-to-follow/<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fprocomm.ieee.org%2Ftransactions-of-professional-communication%2Ffor-prospective-authors%2Fguidelines-to-follow%2F&data=04%7C01%7CHAYHOE_G%40mercer.edu%7C7d8ab84cca3d410cca5e08d9877aed00%7C4fb34d2889b247109bcc30824d17fc30%7C0%7C0%7C637689784321436985%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=VmmEsC%2BkvGJx2AC17oXZDfANt83ZfXhbuzTw68mXczk%3D&reserved=0>).
  * We have added a “Becoming a Reviewer” page to our website (https://procomm.ieee.org/becoming-a-reviewer/<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fprocomm.ieee.org%2Fbecoming-a-reviewer%2F&data=04%7C01%7CHAYHOE_G%40mercer.edu%7C7d8ab84cca3d410cca5e08d9877aed00%7C4fb34d2889b247109bcc30824d17fc30%7C0%7C0%7C637689784321436985%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=PIp5neeOXymipCUMiXkZyCTpUSB%2F1jCnI5zqSGOYf58%3D&reserved=0>) to recruit new scholars and industry practitioners to our review team. This page will be expanded over the next few months to include training videos on the peer review process and the review rubrics for the genres we publish (research articles, integrative literature reviews, case studies, teaching cases, tutorials, and book reviews).
We haven’t yet finished this work and plan to continue with revisions to our author guidelines and review rubrics and with training materials for reviewers in the months ahead.
I want to acknowledge and thank my Associate Editors—Rebekka Andersen, Craig Baehr, Alan Houser, Joyce Karreman, Xiaoli Li, Aimee Kendall Roundtree, Josephine Walwema, and Sean Williams—for their contributions to this effort.
Sincerely,
George Hayhoe
