Associate/Full Professor Tenure System


Position Summary

The Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures at Michigan State University seeks a colleague at the rank of Associate or Full Professor to join our department to participate in and contribute to our first-year writing program and who will be able to contribute to our graduate program in Rhetoric and Writing, especially in areas of composition studies, writing pedagogy, and writing program administration. Our department is an innovative, inclusive community that encourages intellectual and cultural diversity and is dedicated to preparing excellent communicators in the culturally, technologically, and economically dynamic environments of the 21st century. This is a nine-month, academic-year, tenure-system faculty appointment to begin August 16, 2023. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of commitment to first-year writing, a strong record of scholarly achievements in rhetoric and writing Studies, experience in writing program administration, be engaged in culturally relevant teaching practices (undergraduate and graduate), and show evidence of substantial service in both local and national arenas.

We are especially interested in colleagues with a proven research focus and administrative accomplishments in the area of first-year writing. Preferred areas of interest include large-scale assessment and evaluation of writing instruction; diversity and writing instruction/assessment; development and engagement of DEIactivities and initiatives; fostering and supporting faculty research around/in first-year writing; and mentoring graduate students as scholars, teachers, and future administrative leaders.

Doctorate -Rhetoric and Writing

Minimum Requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a PhD or other terminal degree in Rhetoric and Writing or in a closely related field.
