I begin with requisite apologies for mentioning my own work. I did an article on teaching white papers as client projects in
BCQ (now BCPQ) some years ago.

Of course, there are many issues to consider when students do work with clients—especially clients in for-profit industries. This short article does not address those. This article recommends a book on white papers by Mike Stelzner,
Writing White Papers (2007). FWIW, Stelzner has since stopped doing white papers and has moved into social media marketing.

Gordon Graham's White Papers for Dummies (2013) came out after I wrote that article. (Disclosure: I was an editor for the book.) Like other books in the series, it's practical and contains lessons from his experience. Some materials for the book
came from his website and blog. This blog post summarizes some of his key ideas on types of white papers.
