<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.5pt">Please join the CCCC’s Internship Special Interest Group (SIG) for a panel-led conversation on
<b>Monday, December 6 from 11-12 EST</b> about how universities can create internal initiatives that offer financial support to interns participating in unpaid internships and provide academic departments with funding to create or enhance internship programs.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.5pt"> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.5pt">A recent NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) survey of college students found more than 40% of interns surveyed said they were not paid. While completing an internship is essential in today’s
job market, it can be fiscally straining for many students. In an effort to help offset the costs of working in
<strong><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">unpaid</span></strong><b> </b>
internships, postsecondary institutions like Grand Valley State University (GVSU) have created various scholarship funding opportunities for students.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.5pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.5pt">For example, GVSU provides ten $500 scholarships to students during each academic semester (Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer semesters) via the university’s career center. The university has also created an
internship scholarship for first-generation college students participating in unpaid internships.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.5pt">With the help of the Provost’s Office, the GVSU Career Center also allocates funding to various academic departments on campus through the Internship Mini Grant (IMG) to help enhance internship initiatives.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.5pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.5pt">As a result of the IMG program, d</span><span style="font-size:12.5pt">epartments at GVSU have created web resources, developed new internship opportunities for students, designed/evaluated internship courses
and materials to enhance learning, expanded internship opportunities on a global level, and held internship events/fairs.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.5pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.5pt">GVSU panelists (Rachel Becklin, Career Advisor/Internship Specialist; Chris Plouff, interim Provost and Executive Vice President for the Academic and Student Affairs Division; and Katelyn Hanley Semelbauer,
Director of Donor Relations) will discuss initiatives created at the university to help support students in unpaid internship roles and develop internship programming. They will also share how other institutions can create similar opportunities for their students
and faculty.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.5pt">The Internship SIG is hosting the panel as we seek to enlarge the field’s discussions of internships and serve as a potential resource for internship directors, instructors seeking models and practical suggestions
for designing and assessing internship programs. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
