Hiring Range:
$40.00/hr (Workload estimates:
175 hours for 4-5 unit courses* -- syllabus prep, class prep, class
time, office hours and student meetings/correspondence, grading,
and any mandatory meetings/trainings. *for 2-unit courses that are
worth only .5 courses for the faculty member, change to 87.5
hours.)
Job Description:
Purpose
The English Department at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic
university, seeks candidates for a Quarterly Adjunct Lecturer
(non-tenure-track) in Engineering Communications. Contract term is one
quarter. Successful candidates may teach one or two sections of ENGL 181
fall quarter. Instruction may be online.
Basic Qualifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in English or a closely related field,
preferably with coursework in professional writing and at least 4 years of
college or professional teaching experience; must have demonstrated
excellence in teaching
engineering communication and/or technical writing for undergraduates.
Candidates with an M.B.A. or other professional degrees with requisite
experience will be considered.
Responsibilities
Teaching duties include but are not limited to:
1. Teach a course load of at least one and no more than two courses per
quarter, and no more than four in an academic year.
2. Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings and exams on
campus or online in a timely and prepared way;
3. Assigning and evaluating assignments (written work, projects and
exams) that align with the course description and course learning
objectives, and providing timely feedback to students;
4. Hold regular weekly office hours on campus or online.
5. Assign and submit student grades that are appropriate, accurate and
fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the
designated deadline;
6. Administer narrative evaluations approved by the Chairs of the
Department for each course taught.
7. Teach from an approved syllabus for ENGL 181 or work with the Liaison
to the School of Engineering to design an appropriate syllabus for
submission for approval from the Writing Core Curriculum Committee.
8. Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by
the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or by the Chair of the
Department.
Service (0%)
This position does not require any service duties. You may be invited,
but not required, to attend department meetings or activities. This would
be compensable (paid) time.
