*About the Department*

The largest among 10 departments in the College of Humanities and Social
Sciences, English offers a range of undergraduate majors and
concentrations, minors, three master’s programs (MA, MFA, and MSTC), as
well as one joint Ph.D. in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media
(CRDM). We also offer many courses of interest to the University community
as a whole, and we work with other departments and programs — such as
Foreign Languages and Literatures, Women’s Studies, Communication, and
Education — to furnish multidisciplinary opportunities for NC State
students. Located in the Research Triangle Area in Raleigh, North Carolina,
the English department consists of a large, diverse faculty, staff, and
student body that prepares graduates for a large variety of careers.

The Campus Writing and Speaking Program was established in July 1997 to
provide leadership for NC State as it implemented its General Education
Requirements, which state that “each" curriculum is designed so that
upper-level courses and other programmatic experiences help students write
and speak competently in the disciplines.” Our program was the first in the
nation at our class of institution to integrate writing and speaking across
the curriculum using the departmentally-focused model (now sometimes
referred to as the “WEC,” or Writing-Enriched Curriculum). Through a
variety of consultations, workshops, and activities, we are sustaining this
goal.

The Campus Writing and Speaking Program is housed in the Office of Faculty
Excellence within the Office of the Provost. The Executive Vice Chancellor
and Provost is the Chief Academic Officer for North Carolina State
