*Position: Associate Dean of Research and Engagement, College of Humanities
and Social Sciences at NC State University*
This position is a full-time 12-month administrative appointment reporting
to the Dean and is responsible for managing and advancing all aspects of
the research and engagement activity for faculty in the college. The
Associate Dean of Research and Engagement position encompasses the
following areas of responsibility:
Research:
- Lead and implement training and development opportunities to promote
faculty success in acquiring research and fellowship support.
- Facilitate the submission of proposals and coordinate the post-award
administration of grants and contracts.
- Advocate with University Research Administration on behalf of college
research efforts.
- Provide college research funds in support of scholarships across the
departments, in consultation with the Research Committee.
- Identify cross-college, interdisciplinary, and/or multi-university
research initiatives to advance college and university priorities.
- Develop, oversee, and implement the Dean’s priority programs related
to research.
- Serve as the liaison between departments heads, dean, and university
leadership (e.g., Vice Chancellor for Research)
- Manage start-up packages for new faculty hires in collaboration with
department heads
and the Assistant Dean of Finance.
- Manage scholarly reassignment processes and procedures.
- Collaborate with the Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs to
enhance support for student research.
- Collaborate with the Associate Dean of Interdisciplinary Affairs and
Partnerships to pursue interdisciplinary partnerships in the research arena.
- Collaborate with the Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion on research policy, procedure, and other related matters.
- Oversee the college’s research committee.
- Manage college funding programs for research (Faculty Research &
Professional
Development, Junior Faculty Development Award, Proposal Preparation
Program).
Engagement:
- Oversee college centers (Center for Faculty and Community Engagement,
Khayrallah Center, etc.) to ensure alignment with college & university
missions.
- Coordinate the college’s engagement and extension efforts.
- Oversee and implement the Dean’s priority programs related to
engagement and extension.
- Serve as the liaison between department heads, dean, and university-
leadership regardingengagement and extension efforts.
- Attend college leadership meetings.
- Attend relevant university meetings.
- Oversee administrative work of center directors (in their secondary
administrative roles).
- Supervise staff in the Office of Research and Engagement.
- Oversee faculty research awards.
- Coordinate Professorships & Distinguished Professorships.
- Review and approve Conflict of Interest Disclosures & Notices of
Intent for External Activities for Pay for college.
Requires doctoral degree in Humanities or Social Sciences field, or an
equivalent degree, and a record that qualifies for the rank of Professor
and the following:
- Record of academic and research excellence commensurate with the
expectations of a major research university.
- Demonstrated success in pursuing and leading research and engagement
activities.
- Ability to provide a visionary approach to administration/ college
leadership.
- Demonstrated success in research and engagement portfolio
responsibilities.
- Evidence of providing values-driven, transformational leadership.
- Evidence of collaborative leadership in educational settings.
- Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal communication skills, both
with internal and external audiences (e.g., promoting a supportive and
collaborative environment with faculty, staff, and students; engaging
collaboratively with college and university-level leadership).
- Demonstrated ability to support a positive, service-centered
environment.
- History of administrative experience, including budgetary matters,
experience in resource allocation processes, and personnel management.
