-------

The Department of English and Technical Communication<https://english.mst.edu/> at Missouri University of Science & Technology seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor of Technical Communication beginning August 2024.

Successful candidates might diversify the existing strengths in our department through experience with:

  * Technical communication across linguistic and/or cultural divides
  * Innovative technologies, their uses, and their implications
  *   Science and/or engineering communication
  * Social justice in technical communication

This list is not intended to be exhaustive; we recognize that innovative work in technical communication and related fields is happening in focal areas that may not be included here. As such, we invite applicants to envision the ways that the expertise you have cultivated might contribute to the new PhD program as well as other initiatives in our department. Please articulate these perspectives clearly in your application cover letter.

Our proposed new PhD program aims to train professionals on the cutting edge of research and practice in technical communication for the global information economy. We seek applicants for this position who will bring valuable perspectives on the ethics, technological tools, methods/methodologies, and practical impacts of this endeavor. The successful candidate will also be enthusiastic about incorporating these perspectives into instruction in our undergraduate and M.S. curricula.

Experience outside the academy is desirable and might include paid or volunteer work in government, business, nonprofit organizations, industry, or the military, among other venues.

About the Position

This is a research-forward position, requiring an active, ongoing scholarly research program in technical communication, rhetoric, and/or related fields. To allow ample time for research, mentoring graduate students, and maintaining industry relationships, the position carries a 2/2 teaching load.

The successful candidate will have experience teaching courses related to our program offerings, and will be prepared to teach all levels of courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs in technical communication. They will likewise be enthusiastic about developing new courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels. All department faculty are expected to maintain a well-defined and productive research program, as well as to contribute in service to the department, college, and university.

The Department of English and Technical Communication is a multi-disciplinary department, boasting expertise in the fields of English, technical and professional communication, rhetoric, linguistics, creative writing, and English as an additional language. We offer an innovative B.S. in English and technical communication that allows students to select modular foci tailored to their post-graduation interests as well as an M.S. and graduate certificate in technical communication.

The department is committed to the values of inclusion, equity, and diversity, and strongly encourages applications from underrepresented or marginalized communities. Inclusivity is a priority during the application and hiring process as well as during employment in our program. Resources such as on-site childcare, access to a lactation room, regular breaks, inclusive meals, gender neutral restrooms, and other needs as indicated by the candidate will be available during the on-campus interview phase. In service of this commitment, the department will also bear all travel expenses for on-campus interviews up front, rather than relying on reimbursement of candidates.

Missouri S&T is a campus of approximately 9,000 students, and offers degrees in engineering, the sciences, arts, humanities and business, with master's and Ph.D. programs available in many of the science and engineering programs and master's degrees in biological sciences, business administration, and technical communication.
