For a potentially life-saving example of technical communication, read Firearm Violence: A Public Health Crisis in America, available at https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/firearm-violence-advisory.pdf.
This 40-page advisory from the U.S. Surgeon General (including five pages of references) reports on
* the fatalities and injuries resulting from firearm violence (in plain language and a variety of striking graphics)
* the impact of exposure to firearm violence on communities, children, and families
* the chief factors contributing to firearm violence (e.g., 56% of unintentional firearm fatalities among children and adolescents occur in their home, with 74% of the firearms involved stored loaded and 76% stored unlocked [“stored unlocked” being typically in or on a nightstand, under a pillow, on a bed, or under a mattress]).
The advisory offers several recommendations for addressing the public health crisis of firearm violence, including
* more research on causes and consequences
* more education on prevention and preparedness
* more action to regulate storage, access, availability, and product safety
* more support for victims of firearm violence
In addition to rhetorical analysis of the advisory, pertinent class projects might include reviewing/editing the advisory for translation, developing a series of interactive illustrations, or adapting the advisory as a slide presentation for a local community meeting.
A 3-minute video and graphics from the advisory to examine and share are also available at https://www.hhs.gov/surgeongeneral/priorities/firearm-violence/index.html.
