Just chiming in to say that I would also love an updated version of the Rude/Eaton. I really appreciate the organization of the material as well as the exercises (thanks for highlighting them, Katrina!).

I for one would be part of a market for it if anyone takes it on.

I definitely think a new edition of a new technical editing text would be helpful. I usually cobble together various material from the 2019 Technical Editing text from Oxford UP. I actually like that one because it’s a bit more up to date than the Rude/Eaton text. However, the exercises and activities in Rude/Eaton are really good and I do pull information from that one as well. We also use the The Copyeditor’s Handbook and Workbook and the Chicago Manual of Style. Like several in this thread updated material relevant to technical editing is needed. Somewhere in this thread someone mentioned the need for editing audio/video and other digital content. At my institution, editing of audio/video/other digital content is typically covered in either our Writing for Digital Media course or in one or more broadcast journalism classes or in the digital media studies program more than in our technical editing course for various reasons; however, I can see where including this information in a technical editing text would also be needful.

Friends,

Oxford UP published Technical Editing<https://global.oup.com/ushe/product/technical-editing-9780190872670?cc=us&lang=en&> in 2019. I have it but haven’t used it in a class—at almost 600 pages it is too much for the undergraduate courses I teach, but it might work in a graduate course.

In my undergraduate Intro to Tech Editing course I use The Copyeditor’s Handbook and Workbook<https://www.ucpress.edu/books/the-copyeditors-handbook-and-workbook/paper> from UC Press and supplement it with other readings and activities (mostly editing technical texts).

I also wrote several short articles on editing topics not typically covered in textbooks, and I published them on my OER website here: http://groversenglish.com/craftofediting.php. These are free for anyone to use, and I’d love to publish similar articles if any of you have stuff you’d like to write (mine often stem from in-class lectures or discussions that I’ve given repeatedly).

Happy teaching!
David

I’d speak with editors of the book series at the WAC Clearinghouse to see if they might be interested.

Hi Folks,
I have a faculty member in my program who teaches editing and absolutely loves Technical Editing by Rude/Eaton. Because it's out of print, however, it is very expensive for students to purchase. We're looking for suggestions on replacement texts that others have used instead, or any updates on possible reissues of that textbook.
Thanks,
