We are very excited to announce an opening in our program here at George
Washington University. Please feel free to contact me with any questions:
Jessica McCaughey (jessmcc at gwu.edu).

*Assistant Professor of Writing specializing in professional, business, or
technical writing*

The University Writing Program (UWP) at The George Washington University in
Washington, DC, seeks a specialist in teaching professional, business, or
technical writing, broadly construed, to join the program at the rank of
Assistant Professor (non-tenure accruing) as early as Fall 2019. The
successful candidate will contribute an ongoing research agenda to
complement the work of our diverse, multidisciplinary faculty and play a
central role in developing course offerings that expand the program’s reach
both within and outside of the university.

We seek a person who can contribute to our First Year Writing (academic
writing) division by regularly teaching the required first-year
introduction to academic writing and research course (UW 1020), as well as
collaborate with our other divisions, noted below. We are particularly
interested in better serving our students in business, international
affairs, public health and health services, political communication, and
engineering, and we seek to attract faculty who are culturally and
academically diverse.

Minimum Qualifications:

   - Ph.D. or other terminal degree completed before date of appointment
   - A research agenda related to composition, rhetoric, or professional,
   business, or technical writing
   - Experience and evidence of excellence teaching professional, business,
or technical writing in a university setting or in a workplace or
   professional setting
   - Some familiarity with contemporary composition and/or rhetorical
   theory and practice

GW is a major research university, serving approximately 26,000 graduate
and undergraduate students across multiple campuses in and around the
nation’s capital. The UWP is one of the largest and most active academic
units at GW, encompassing three divisions -- First Year Writing, Writing in
the Disciplines, and the Writing Center -- as well as a nascent
Professional Writing program with a mandate to expand UWP’s engagement and
impact beyond the traditional classroom. A strong candidate would be able
to contribute in all of these areas.

Regular non-tenure-track (Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor rank)
appointments at GW have relative parity with tenure-track positions in
salary, benefits, and access to promotion. In the UWP, these positions
carry teaching, research, and service expectations, in that order of
priority. The standard teaching load for UWP faculty is 3/3. In the future,
some portion of this teaching load may be reallocated toward administrative
and program-building work, as appropriate, given ongoing assessments of
operational priorities and opportunities for programmatic growth. The
initial contract period will be three years and is renewable following a
successful reappointment process.

Applicants should submit an online application at
http://www.gwu.jobs/postings/56822 and upload the following documents:

   - an application letter under “Cover Letter”,
   - a statement of teaching philosophy under “Statement of Teaching
   Interest,”
   - a statement of research interests under “Statement of Research
   Interest,” and
   - a C.V.

Review of applications will begin November 26, 2018, and will continue
until the position is filled. Only complete applications will be considered.

Questions about the position may be directed to Professor Jessica
McCaughey, Chair of the Search Committee, at *jessmcc at gwu.edu

background screening.

Note: This position is pending final budget approval.
