The Department of English at The University of Texas at Arlington is hiring an Assistant Professor of Practice (NTT w/job security) for a technical writing and professional communication position. The department recently established a minor in tech writing, and we have a certificate as well. Our accelerated online program enrolls over 7,000 students a year for the introductory technical writing course, with pre-nursing students filling this population. In addition, our departmental committee is currently standardizing the technical writing curriculum for face-to-face course offerings with plans to pilot the syllabus and assignments during Fall 2019. Moreover, department colleagues pitched and had approved new undergraduate technical writing courses for grant proposal writing, procedures, and copyediting.

UT-Arlington is in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex (the metro area has a population of approximately 7 million people), and there are several tech comm careers available for recent undergraduate students. As such, the ideal candidate for this position will have one or more technological literacies with software used within the industry. We’re looking for someone who can offer courses UI/UX design, usability testing, and/or documentation management and online help development and single sourcing. We most prefer candidates with a PhD in Technical Communication. The minimum qualifications are a PhD in Rhetoric and Writing/Composition, English, or a related field.

From experience, I can share working with colleagues in the department is delightful and supportive. And, with the 5th most diverse student population in the nation, our students engage with culturally and socially aware traditions and practices, e.g., the Native American Student Association holds an annual Pow Wow (one of the largest Pow Wows in Texas), and the university celebrates and promotes Hispanic Heritage, Asian Heritage, Black History, and International Students through month- and week- long events. Students also routinely engage with civic projects with community partners in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area.

I’m chairing the search committee, so please feel free to send questions about the job posting and/or application materials.
