The Utah Valley University Department of English and Literature invites applications for two tenure-track positions in Rhetoric and Composition to begin August 2020.

Successful candidates for the position will teach first-year composition, technical communication, advanced editing, document design, grant writing, and other advanced writing courses. The candidates will join a department of English and Literature with a thriving cohort of Writing Studies and Technical Communication colleagues in support of the department’s Writing Studies Emphasis, Minor in Writing Studies, and certificate in Editing and Document Design.

Candidates should demonstrate a strong background in the teaching of technical communication, professional writing, and rhetorical theories. Ideal candidates will have expertise in at least one of the following areas: 1) advanced editing, document design, document management, usability testing, and typesetting, and/or 2) writing and designing for the web using basic text editors and advanced knowledge of markup languages. Desired secondary areas of interest include gender studies, feminist rhetorics, or multicultural rhetorics.

Standard teaching load is 4/4, with opportunities for reassigned time for administrative work. Experience and interest in student journal advising and/or writing program administration are highly sought.

Required Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or closely related field is required at time of appointment.

Three years of teaching experience at the college/university level.

Must be willing and able to teach all modalities, including online, hybrid, and face to face.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of subject matter and course content.
• Knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with a committee at the departmental, college, and university levels.
• Ability to manage, motivate, and evaluate students. Requires large classroom, small group and interpersonal interactions with students, faculty, and members of the campus.

Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidates will have expertise in theories and teaching of first-year writing, technical communication, professional writing, and rhetorical theory. We seek a colleague who expects to serve on department committees and in administrative roles, including writing program administration and student journal advising, and university committees, such as faculty senate. Preferred secondary interests include new gender studies, feminist rhetorics, and multicultural rhetorics.

Physical Requirements
Work is normally performed in a typical classroom/office work environment.
