As I understand it one may find it insightful to view these policies as an extension of the larger tensions between the local/national and the global.

It is my understanding that things have moved on since Robert Reich wrote his Work of Nations in the previous millenium and predicted some of the key variables for current globalization.

Various countries in the British Commonwealth (Bo Jo, Modi, and Scot Morrison) have chosen the local/national over the global while Justin Trudeau as I understand it is global whose position in parliament is shaky.

Beyond the British Commonwealth as well, Abe, Bolsonaro, and Ing-Wen it is my understanding belong to the local/national.

Hence, questions such as who gets to benefit from globalization or lose out as a result of globalization both here and there may provide insight. Are Dalits from the country of India benefitting from the H-1Bs, for instance?

As a Canadian, I know we have our own justice and human rights challenges—similar to but also different from those in the US. So, I have been following this conversation with great interest and pride in you all for stepping bravely into the moment. It obviously is not a one-and-done moment, but an occasion for constant vigilance. I was so glad to see the reversal of the racist policy. In Canada, the government has just announced that students studying at Canadian universities can count their online school time toward a post-graduation work permit (which is often a first step toward citizenship).  You can see the report in the linked article. https://apple.news/A1SScjHlWTfqgauaOPuY9ggI hope that saner minds can prompt the US toward a similar position. In the meantime, do celebrate the small victory achieved by your activism and compassion.

Dear colleagues,

It is with great relief that I share the good news that the Trump administration is reversing the SEVP modification:

§ “Government Backs Down on International Student Policy”:https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2020/07/14/trump-administration-drops-directive-international-students-and-online-courses?utm_source=ihe&utm_medium=editorial-site&utm_content=breakingnews&fbclid=IwAR2TEnVTww7JANI2BI5V5FT25H23RBMJ2Znbw-wnIZ0VoIugsFgIsiOUj6w

§ “The ICE policy that would expel international students taking online classes is being rolled back”: https://www.businessinsider.com/ice-may-reverse-directive-that-could-deport-international-students-2020-7

As the grad director of a large graduate program, I have the honor of working closely with international students, and I can tell you that this modification has rocked some international students to their core. For many, the reversal of the modification won’t reverse the trauma of being positioned as an expendable pawn by federal xenophobic and racist legislation used to pressure universities to re-open campuses and offer (more) in-person courses.

Many thanks to those of you who support international students with your words and actions, resisted the SEVP modification, reached out to university, state, and federal official contacts to ask for lawsuits, etc.

Angela
