1. Competitive Funding for Onsite MA & PhD Students

We remain well-poised in an era of uncertain financial times for higher education. We guarantee four years of annual stipends ($20,000) for all of our onsite PhD students and two years of stipends ($14,000) for our onsite MA students. Lubbock, TX also offers a low cost of living for a city with a population of 300,000+.

2. Diverse Faculty Strengths

We have fifteen assistant, associate and full professors with an array of theoretical, practical, and methodological approaches to technical communication, and rhetoric. Our particular area strengths are:

+ Technical Communication and User-Centered Design
+ Rhetorics of Science, Health, and Medicine
+ Visual and Digital Rhetorics
+ Composition, Literacy, and Pedagogy
+ Ethics, Feminism, and Public Rhetoric

3. Graduate Student Placement in Academia and Industry
As a program, we realize that the traditional purpose of a graduate degree has been changing from the exclusive pursuit of a tenure-track academic position. Our current MA and PhD students come to us from companies like Google and Microsoft to grow their practitioner careers as technical communicators while others prepare for traditional academic posts. Here are where some of our 2019-2020 PhD graduates landed:

  * Dr. Julie Gerdes, Assistant Professor of Technical and Professional Writing and Rhetoric at Virginia Tech University. Her research examines methodologies for understanding and implementing inclusive risk communication, particularly during public health emergencies.
  * Dr. Angela Kaberline McCauley, Director of Special Instructional Projects at Texas Southmost College. Her dissertation advocated for an asset-based community development framework in philanthropic contexts to better understand grant proposal development.
  * Dr. Leah Heilig, Assistant Professor of English at the University of Rhode Island’s Department of Rhetoric and Writing. Her dissertation explored neurodiversity in interaction design.
  * Dr. Kourtney Moore, Technical Writer at Solugen Chemical. Her dissertation was an ethnographic investigation into Hip Hop and African American culture concerning systemic racism and oppression.
  * Dr. Erica Stone, Assistant Professor of English and Associate Director of General Education English at Middle Tennessee State University. Her dissertation employed a feminist empirical case study to examine how community organizers use narrative to galvanize support and encourage action.
  * Dr. Nancy Barber Muncie, Engineering Process Analyst at Gulfstream Aerospace. Her dissertation revealed how a master teacher employs UCD/UX methods to write workplace knowledge.

Similarly, we can prepare our MA students for industry or for application to PhD programs in rhetoric, composition, and technical communication. Here are some of our 2019-2020 MA graduates:

  * Kirsten Morris, Instructional Accessibility Specialist at University of Utah.
  * Dana Wilder, pursuing a PhD in Human Factors Psychology at Texas Tech University.
  * Jeanna Balreira, Director of Creative and Editorial Services at Trinity University.
  * Sierra Sinor, pursuing a PhD in Technical Communication and Rhetoric at Texas Tech.

4. Flexibility for a Synchronous Online Graduate Education Experience

Our online and onsite MA and PhD programs offer great practical flexibility for current or future working professionals. All of our courses are offered online in a synchronous format that brings together all of our students in a virtual community of learning.

Zoom Graduate Program Town Hall Session on Nov. 18, 6:00 pm CST.
