Colleagues,

You all are so amazing!!! Thank you thank you thank you.

Kim, thank you for the resources and especially the video link! I'll forward your email so Beth, my colleague, can connect with you.

And please, no apologies necessary for recommending your own work, Russell. I recommend your scholarship on plain language all the time.

And Mike, thank you for archiving and expanding your Twitter thread here!

Hi Cagle,

I begin with requisite apologies for mentioning my own work. I did an article on teaching white papers as client projects in BCQ (now BCPQ) some years ago.
"Teaching White Papers Through Client Projects"
76(1) 105–113 (2013)
DOI: 10.1177/1080569912454713
Of course, there are many issues to consider when students do work with clients—especially clients in for-profit industries. This short article does not address those. This article recommends a book on white papers by Mike Stelzner, Writing White Papers (2007). FWIW, Stelzner has since stopped doing white papers and has moved into social media marketing.

Gordon Graham's White Papers for Dummies (2013) came out after I wrote that article. (Disclosure: I was an editor for the book.) Like other books in the series, it's practical and contains lessons from his experience. Some materials for the book came from his website and blog. This blog post summarizes some of his key ideas on types of white papers.

My dissertation (years ago) was on white papers in high-tech industries. Articles from it landed in TC.

“Writing White Papers in High-Tech Industries: Perspectives from the Field.” Technical Communication 54.2 (2007): 187–200.

For an updated history of the label "white paper," see Malone and Wright in JBTC, "'To Promote That Demand': Toward a History of the Marketing White Paper as a Genre." (2017)

Hi all!

A colleaguehere at UK is looking for resources on teaching white papers, which I haven't explicitly taught before.

Do y'all have any resources you're willing to share, such as:

* Assignment sheets?
* Readings?
* Lesson plans?
* Models?
* Hand-outs?

Thank you!
