Dear ATTW-L,

My name is Everardo (Eve) Cuevas and I am a doctoral candidate in Writing,
Rhetoric and American Cultures at Michigan State University. My
IRB-approved dissertation project seeks to gather stories about how people
of color practice antiracism in rhet/comp. I am writing to invite you to
participate in my project and share your definitions and stories of
antiracist practice. If you want to get straight to it, you can click here
for the qualtrics survey.

Participant Eligibility

To be eligible to participate in this study, you must meet all of the
following criteria:

   -

identify as a person of color and be able to name your ethnic and/or
   racial identity categories;
   -

identify as a member of the fields of Composition, Rhetoric, and/or
   Writing Studies (“rhet/comp”); and
   -

identify as someone who practices antiracism, broadly construed.

Additionally, I welcome participants from a variety of regions, careers,
and positionalities because “people of color” is a very broad, diverse, and
non-monolithic identity category.

Participation Expectations

This study entails a 15 - 20 minute Qualtrics survey asking you to define
antiracism, reflect on your antiracist practices, and share a story about
engaging in antiracist practice and optional participation in three group
interviews with a cohort of antiracist practitioners of color. The survey
should take 15 - 20 min especially if you have a story in mind before you
start it. The heart of the survey is three open-ended questions.
Importantly, you do not have to participate in the collaborative interviews
to complete the survey!

If you are interested in participating in this study, please begin with the
survey which offers the consent form and a full description of the project
and participation: https://msu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5aHybtr8YKiqTjg

If you are interested in participating in the collaborative interviews,
please leave your contact information at the end of the survey or contact
me after you complete the survey. The three interviews will happen over
Zoom and will be scheduled in a timely manner reflective of participant
needs.

The first, last, and every 5th person who completes the survey will be
compensated with an antiracism-related book if they leave their contact
information. Participants who take part in all of the collaborative
interviews will be compensated with a 125 US dollar honorarium in the form
of a Visa gift card for their time and labor.

As a queer scholar of color in rhet/comp, I am particularly interested with
working with other people of color because antiracism has seen a revival as
both a reckoning force and a buzzword in rhet/comp. I seek to work with
practitioners of color because I am committed to creating more knowledge
and community by and for people of color as we seek to rectify the harms of
white supremacy as members of colonial universities in settler-states.

I have also attached the longer description and consent forms for both
parts of the project if you would like to see them ahead of time. Please
also forward this to anyone you think meets the qualifications and would be
interested in participating in this project.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at
cuevasev at msu.edu or my doctoral advisor, Dr. Kristin Arola,
arola at msu.edu. Thank
you for your time and interest.

All my best,

Eve Cuevas
