For a sample of technical communication that addresses important ethical issues, consider the materials related to DALLE-2, “a new AI system that can create realistic images and art from a description in natural language” (https://openai.com/dall-e-2/).

The creators of DALLE-2 acknowledge its capacity to “introduce or amplify bias” (e.g., “produces particularly biased or sexualized results in response to prompts requesting images of women”) but also explain the policies instituted to mitigate this capacity (e.g., continuous monitoring, human review, access restrictions to 400 trusted users). A lively class discussion might consider the ethics and efficacy of the mitigation policies as well as the AI itself.

Review the Content Policy at https://labs.openai.com/policies/content-policy and, more important, the Risks and Limitations at https://github.com/openai/dalle-2-preview/blob/main/system-card.md.
