Lecturer/Lecturer II in Digital Narrative and Interactive Design (English Department)

The University of Pittsburgh English Department invites applications for the position of Lecturer or Lecturer II for our rapidly expanding Digital Narrative and Interactive Design (DNID) major. It is a full-time renewable position for an initial term of three years with the opportunity of promotion and career advances. The position will begin on September 1, 2022.

We are looking for a versatile instructor with a terminal degree (Ph.D.) in English or a related field who can teach interdisciplinary courses that emphasize digital modes of composition, text, and analysis in a vibrant new major that bridges English with our School of Computing and Information (SCI). We are especially interested in pedagogical approaches that connect issues of racial justice, climate, and environment or gender and sexuality to contemporary digital modes. The successful candidate will teach gateway courses such as Narrative and Technology and Digital Humanity and more advanced courses such as Interactive Literature and Composing Digital Media. This future colleague will also be encouraged to develop current areas of strength in the major, which include print media, making, and game design. We especially welcome candidates who are interested in extending established connections with maker spaces and labs on campus and in the community and/or candidates with experience in industry or design.

The DNID major is a collaboration between English (which includes programs in Literature, Composition, Film & Media, and Writing) and the School of Computing and Information (Computer Science and Information Science). Students who major in DNID take courses offered by English and SCI, which are sometimes jointly taught, and complete capstone projects that synthesize digital and narrative modes. The major is flexible and offers three suggested tracks: Online Media, Game Design, and Critical Making.

This position comes with a 3/3 teaching load, with the expectation of service to the DNID program and English department. Service may include assessment, course development support, directing DNID students on independent study projects.

To apply, please supply the following materials by March 15, 2022:

  *   Cover letter
  *   C.V.
  * Teaching statement that addresses digital pedagogy
  * Statement of diversity (1-2 pp.) that demonstrates your past and/or potential contributions to diversity and inclusion through teaching, research, and service

  * A teaching portfolio that includes sample syllabi for two courses with an emphasis on digital media composition, digital texts, and/or interactive narrative and at least two writing assignments or sequences (other teaching materials from these classes, such as in-class workshops practices, are welcome)
  * Student surveys for three classes
  * 3 confidential letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the candidate’s teaching
