Dear Colleagues,

I’m writing with one final nudge to encourage students to participate in the study described below.

My collaborators and I are extremely grateful to those of you who’ve already shared the survey with your students and professional networks. We’d like to increase representation from folks across the U.S. and Canada, so we’re extending the invitation to participate once more.

See below for additional details and don’t hesitate to email me directly with questions!

Gratefully,

Christa, Yanar, and Sushil

Subject: Seeking business, professional, technical writing students
Dear Colleagues,

Yanar Hashlamon, Dr. Sushil Oswal, and I are writing to invite people to participate in a nationwide study about undergraduate business, professional, and/or technical writing classes. If you or someone you know has in the last five years taken or is currently enrolled in a business, professional, and/or technical writing class, please share this invitation with them. The title of the study is, “Professional Writing Pedagogies for Neurodiverse and/or Disabled Writers<https://osu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3KmKYa6dllAZYfc>” and it has been approved by Ohio State University’s IRB (Protocol #2018B0473). Participants do not have to identify as neurodiverse and/or disabled in order to participate. They simply need to have taken a business, professional, and/or technical writing course in the last five years.

We are investigating how undergraduate business, professional, and/or technical writing classes attend to different students’ learning needs and writing practices. We are interested in hearing about students’ experiences with different kinds of classroom and learning activities—specifically, what types of activities do students feel are important? Which activities do students find difficult?

Here is a link to a survey<https://osu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3KmKYa6dllAZYfc> that will ask about students’ experiences in that class. Participants will also be asked if they identify as neurodiverse and/or a person with a disability; they may choose not to answer. Participants’ responses will be confidential and will not be shared with their professor or classmates. If participants ever want to stop participating in the survey, they can do so at any time.

The survey should take between 10-15 minutes to complete, after which participants may choose to enter a raffle for one of ten $25 digital gift cards. Participants will also be asked if they would like to participate in an optional, compensated follow-up interview via Zoom.

Participation in the study is completely voluntary. We hope you will consider participating! Your insight is important to this project and has the potential to change how business, professional, and technical writing classes are taught. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions. This research is supported by a Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching & Learning Grant<https://drakeinstitute.osu.edu/>.
