If you have students (or colleagues) who think that technical communication can’t be fun or festive, direct their attention to the three trail maps of “Witch Houses” created by Friends of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles (https://www.fortla.org).

The trail maps include photographs of the exotic houses in question (interiors and exteriors) as well as facts and figures, explanations of architectural features, stories about the houses, and newspaper clippings about notorious residents or activities related to the houses.

• Witch Houses 2: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dGHFF1_4OmtbTBlHXT1ikCYxXA6dZyS5/view

• Witch Houses 3: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PfeNGid5VhhRvbV8V_vRl_ea8VG9SI-2/view

The trail maps also include rules: for example, “Don’t be a Trail Trasher! Take only pictures of the outside! And leave only footprints on public sidewalks!”

FORT: LA also offers trails maps on serious subjects, including

• Civil Rights Houses: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fytM9JJEuLLHqJfDam_Y5AFBaxPM8HTH/view

• The Lasting Effects of the HOLC Redlining Map: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rK8NJeCbBXdcPdnh0gTMjltndipsdtlw/view

• Postwar Japanese American Architects: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VRgfBN0maBtjaeoVOdW2ic7o802Njn8n/view<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VRgfBN0maBtjaeoVOdW2ic7o802Njn8n/view?usp=sharing>

Your students might be inspired to develop trail maps of salient houses in their local communities.
