[ATTW-L] [EXT] technical editing class -- hard-copy markup?

Hi, Jonathan.

I teach tech editing regularly and stopped doing hard copy marking about 4 years ago because technical editors/writers report they don't use it. (Most of these folks don't work in publishing.) You can see my rationale in this video. https://youtu.be/k_JJj0eMEos I rely mostly on findings from Kreth & Bowen's survey of tech editors published in 2017 in the IEEE TPC.

I believe my students' time is far better spent learning how to use digital technology (even if it's MS Word) to be both more effective and more efficient as a copyeditor—especially because the number of editing jobs continues to decline and companies are increasingly reluctant to hire dedicated technical editors.

My two cents. Good luck!
Kim

Subject: [EXT] [ATTW-L] technical editing class -- hard-copy markup?

Hi, colleagues.

I have a question, and I'd like your input.

I'm updating my Technical Editing class, and I'm pondering whether to
keep or cut the unit on hard-copy markup. I taught this unit in years
past to good effect, but now that most editing is done electronically, I
wonder if hard-copy markup is a dead skill.

If you were to (or if you actually do) teach a course on technical
editing, would you teach hard-copy markup?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
