Assistant Professor: Professional Writing

The Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies at San Diego State University seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member specializing in Rhetoric and Professional Writing at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning in Fall Semester, 2021. Qualifications for the position include a Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Writing Studies, or a closely related field such as Literacy Studies or Communication. 

The successful candidate will teach, research, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in Rhetoric and Professional Writing; thus, we seek candidates with a demonstrated capacity for scholarly research and publication and a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching in the field. To complement and build on current faculty strengths, we are especially interested in candidates who have teaching experience and scholarly research in one or more of the following areas:  technical writing and editing, business writing, grant writing, health and medical communication, workplace studies, media or technology studies, user experience/usability, community engagement, scientific rhetoric/writing, and digital/visual rhetoric.  Workplace experience in related areas is highly valued, as is experience with and commitment to anti-racist pedagogy.

We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria. Candidates that meet BIE criteria: (a) are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline, (b) have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline, (c) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, (d) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research, (e) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group, (f) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities, (g) have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education. Candidates should indicate in their cover letters how they meet at least two of these criteria.

The Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies is a freestanding academic unit within the College of Arts and Letters comprised of collegial, nationally and internationally recognized faculty with interests in literacy and the teaching of writing, rhetorical theory and the history of rhetoric, and professional and public discourse.
