The Department of English at Texas Tech University invites applications for 2 full-time, non-tenure track Lecturers in the First-Year Writing Program beginning August 2022. We seek colleagues who are committed to developing a culture of writing at Texas Tech, to improving the quality of writing instruction, and to the continual improvement of our First-Year Writing Program. A demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serving diverse populations, and experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students is highly desirable.

This position requires teaching 4 sections of English 1301 and/or 1302 a semester. Lecturers will also have opportunities to contribute to the program through curriculum development, programmatic assessment, and assisting with professional development. Service to the department, college, and university is expected.

Lecturers at Texas Tech have academic freedom and are reappointed annually up through their sixth year, at which point they can earn continuing appointment and promotion to senior lecturer.

Texas Tech’s First-Year Writing Program is housed in the Department of English and serves over 6,000 students annually. The program was recently heavily revised in 2018, with revitalized and reimagined curricula, professional development, and course delivery models. The program is a two-course sequence: English 1301 grounds students in the reading, writing, and rhetorical practices necessary for engaging in civic discourse and for success in college and beyond. English 1302 builds on those skills by focusing on inquiry and research. Special sections of English 1302 are also offered for writing in the disciplines (e.g., engineering, health professions). More information about the program can be found at https://www.depts.ttu.edu/english/fyw/.

Texas Tech University is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and designated as a Carnegie Tier One (Highest Research Activity) institution. It has a law school, a medical school, and colleges of Arts and Sciences, Agriculture, Architecture, Business Administration, Engineering, Human Sciences, Media and Communication, and Visual and Performing Arts. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest of these, representing 28% of the total enrollment of 35,000. The university is located in Lubbock, a rapidly growing city of more than 300,000 on the high plains. Lubbock enjoys 260 days of sunshine every year. Mountains with skiing and other activities are only 4 hours away, and just a 5-hour drive can take you west to Albuquerque or east to Dallas-Fort Worth.
