For a timely example of a research report related to social justice, visit “Immigrants in United States of America” at https://map.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/locations/national/ for facts and figures about immigrants in the US (e.g., ages, countries of origin, levels of education, taxes paid, economic power, rates of employment, key occupations, numbers naturalized, numbers of registered voters). Information is also available specific to every state and to major cities.

Students might assess the clarity and propriety of the report’s verbal explanations and visual displays (e.g., no images of human bengs) as well as the report’s rhetorical impact and ethical implications. The interactive map at https://data.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/map-the-impact is ripe for UX analysis or for engaging pertinent local communities in participatory analysis.

Students might also review the details of the report’s methodology at https://map.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/methodology/ and discuss how and why conscientious research—instead of vitriolic caricature—is a superior foundation for immigration programs and policies.
